Ever wonder if the wool from older sheep have stories to tell? My sheep live their entire lives here at Viriditas Farm. These merino’s do not produce much meat with their bodies (so, even if I had the temperament to be in the meat trade, this breed’s biology would not sustain it), they turn all that cellulosic material into gorgeous wool. The brown sheep when they age change into a light brown color- which is very nice for natural dyeing. The black sheep become a dark silver/steel grey color. As they age less wool is produced, but it gets finer. This is a 3 ply of these super soft elderly sheep (elderlana). 150 yards on a 4 oz skein spun using the certified organic processing for washing and spinning at Green Mountain Spinnery in Vermont.
